How Much Does Commercial Truck Insurance Cost for a New Authority?

New authority carriers get quoted higher than established fleets, and the reason is straightforward: underwriters have no loss history to price against, so they price the risk profile instead. Here is what actually moves the number.
The factors that drive your premium
Driver experience — years of verifiable CDL experience is the single largest lever. A driver with two years of experience and a clean MVR prices very differently from one with eight.
MVR history — accidents, moving violations, suspensions, and especially major violations in the prior 60 months. Majors disqualify a driver with most standard markets entirely.
Radius of operation — local, intermediate, and long haul are priced as distinct exposures. Long haul costs materially more.
Commodity hauled — general freight prices below refrigerated, and both price well below hazmat, auto hauling, or heavy haul.
Garaging ZIP code — where the truck sits overnight drives liability pricing more than most owners expect. Dense metro ZIPs price higher.
Vehicle values and deductibles — stated value on each unit drives the physical damage portion.
Years in business — this is the one that improves automatically, and it is why year two typically prices better than year one.
What you can actually control in year one
You cannot change your years in business, but you can change how the account is presented. Accurate radius classification, complete driver information with verifiable experience, documented maintenance practices, and telematics or dash cam adoption all measurably affect what markets will offer.
The most expensive mistake new authorities make is submitting incomplete information. An incomplete submission gets priced defensively or declined outright. A complete one gets shopped properly.
Why shopping matters more for new authority
Carrier appetite for new authority varies enormously. Some markets will not write a DOT number under twelve months old at any price. Others build programs specifically for it. Going to one carrier and accepting their number means you are seeing one opinion of your risk, not the market's.
iAgency is licensed in all 50 states and shops your account across Progressive, Geico, Cover Whale, and specialty MGA markets. Send your DOT number, unit list, and driver list to service@iagency.biz or call (469) 501-1071. Most complete submissions come back with a full quote package inside one business day.
