Non-Trucking Liability and Bobtail Insurance: What Leased Owner-Operators Need

If you are leased to a motor carrier, their liability policy covers you while you are under dispatch. The moment you are not under dispatch — driving home, running a personal errand, deadheading for personal reasons — that coverage stops. Non-trucking liability fills that gap.

Non-trucking liability versus bobtail

The terms get used interchangeably, but they are not identical. Bobtail traditionally referred to coverage while operating the tractor without a trailer attached. Non-trucking liability is broader: it covers operation off dispatch regardless of whether a trailer is attached. Modern policies are typically written as non-trucking liability, which is the coverage you actually want.

What it does not cover

  • It does not cover you while under dispatch — that is the motor carrier's policy

  • It does not cover physical damage to your own truck — that requires separate physical damage coverage

  • It does not cover cargo

  • It does not substitute for primary liability if you are running under your own authority

If you have your own authority

Non-trucking liability is the wrong product. Carriers operating under their own authority need primary commercial auto liability meeting the FMCSA financial responsibility requirement. Buying NTL when you need primary liability leaves you uninsured for your actual operation and out of compliance with your authority.

Occupational accident coverage

Leased owner-operators are usually not covered by the motor carrier's workers compensation, since they are contractors rather than employees. Occupational accident coverage fills that gap, covering medical costs and disability from work-related injury. It is commonly bought alongside non-trucking liability.
