How 92 Trucking Companies Got Launched the Right Way

  • 4 min read

Starting a trucking company is one of the boldest moves a person can make. You've got your CDL, your DOT authority is in motion, and you're ready to move freight.

The last thing you want is to find out — after the fact — that your insurance wasn't set up right.

That's the gap Chris Barrett has spent the last eight months closing.

92 Businesses. One Producer Who Picked Up the Phone.

Chris has now written $1,056,860 in premium, making him iAgency's first million-dollar producer.

He got there by binding 92 policies in eight months — almost entirely for owner-operators, small fleets, and new motor carriers getting their start in commercial trucking.

The million is worth celebrating. What it represents is worth more: 92 trucking businesses that launched covered, compliant, and ready to work.

What a New Motor Carrier Needs Before the First Load

If you're starting a trucking company, the insurance side gets overwhelming fast. Here's what has to be in place:

  • Primary Liability — Required by the FMCSA for anyone with active DOT authority. Non-negotiable, and the minimums depend on what you haul.

  • Cargo Insurance — Protects the freight you're responsible for. Most brokers require it before they'll give you a load.

  • Physical Damage — Covers your truck when it's damaged in an accident, regardless of fault. If you financed your equipment, your lender will require it.

  • General Liability — Covers the part of your business that happens outside the truck: injuries or property damage at a dock, a yard, a customer's site, or during loading and unloading. Many shippers won't add you to their approved carrier list without it.

  • Bobtail and Non-Trucking Liability — Covers you when you're driving without a trailer or off dispatch. If you're leased to a motor carrier, their policy usually stops the moment you drop the load. That gap is where a lot of owner-operators find out they were uncovered.

  • MCS-90 Endorsement — Filed with your policy to satisfy federal financial responsibility requirements. It has to match how you actually operate.

  • Certificate of Insurance (COI) — Brokers and shippers ask constantly. When you're booking a load, waiting two days for a COI isn't an option.

Chris issues same-day COIs. That matters when you're trying to keep the wheels turning.

Motus: The New System Everyone Is Still Figuring Out

What changed

If you've applied for or renewed operating authority recently, you've run into Motus — the FMCSA's new registration and identity-verification system. It replaced the process carriers had used for years, and it changed how your operation is described, verified, and carried forward into everything downstream.

Why it hits your insurance

The details in your Motus profile — how your operation is classified, the authority type, the radius, the commodities you haul — flow into how underwriters see you.

When the profile doesn't match how you actually run, you feel it:

  • Quotes come back priced for a business you're not in

  • Filings get rejected

  • Renewals stall

  • And you're the one left explaining it

What we do about it

We've spent this year walking carriers through it. Reading the profile, finding where it drifted from reality, getting it corrected, and making sure the policy that gets written matches the operation that's actually on the road.

It's unglamorous work, and it has saved our clients real money. A profile that reflects your business is a profile that gets priced like your business.

If you're staring at Motus and not sure whether your profile says what you think it says, that's a conversation worth having before your next renewal — not after.

Why the Producer Behind Your Policy Matters

Commercial trucking insurance isn't a commodity you click through on a website. Radius of operation, cargo type, equipment value, authority age, the Motus profile — all of it shapes your rate and your actual coverage.

A producer who doesn't know trucking can get you a policy that looks fine on paper and leaves you exposed in practice.

Chris has the best quote-to-close rate at iAgency. That's not a sales stat. It's what happens when people call looking for help and find someone who knows the answer.

The Hero of This Story Is the Trucker

Every one of those 92 policies represents a person who bet on themselves. An owner-operator who bought their first truck. A small fleet owner scaling the right way. Someone who needed the insurance done correctly so they could focus on running their business.

Our job is to be the crew behind the driver. Do the paperwork right, get the coverage right, answer the phone when something comes up.

Congratulations, Chris

First million-dollar producer at iAgency. Earned one policy at a time, one trucking company at a time. We're proud of what you built — and more importantly, what you helped 92 other people build.
