Commercial Truck Insurance FAQ: Costs, Coverage, and Requirements

The questions below are the ones motor carriers actually ask us every day. Answers are written for owner-operators and small fleets, not for insurance people.
How much does commercial truck insurance cost?
Cost depends on radius of operation, commodity hauled, driver experience and MVR history, vehicle values, garaging ZIP code, and years in business. A new authority with an inexperienced driver running long haul will pay dramatically more than an established fleet running local with clean MVRs. We shop multiple carriers so you see the real spread rather than one company's number.
What insurance do I need to get my own authority?
At minimum you need commercial auto liability meeting the FMCSA financial responsibility requirement, which is $750,000 for general freight, and a BMC-91X filing submitted to FMCSA on your behalf. Practically speaking you also need $100,000 in motor truck cargo because brokers require it, and physical damage if your truck is financed.
What is trailer interchange coverage?
Trailer interchange covers physical damage to a trailer you are pulling that you do not own, when you have it under a written interchange agreement. If you pull other carriers' or shippers' trailers, most interchange agreements make you responsible for damage, and your own physical damage policy will not respond because you do not own the trailer.
Do I need cargo insurance for a box truck?
If you are hauling freight for hire, yes. Almost every broker load confirmation requires proof of motor truck cargo coverage, typically $100,000. Some commodities and shippers require more. Without it you will be shut out of most broker freight regardless of what the law technically requires.
What is non-trucking liability or bobtail coverage?
Non-trucking liability covers you while operating your truck for non-business purposes, off dispatch. If you are leased to a motor carrier, their policy covers you while under dispatch, but not when you take the truck home or run a personal errand. Bobtail fills that gap.
Why did my commercial truck insurance premium go up?
The most common drivers are a new violation or accident on a driver's MVR, adding an inexperienced driver, increasing your radius of operation, a change in commodity, deteriorating CSA scores, or broad market hardening in commercial auto. Losses in your own policy period matter most, but industry-wide loss trends affect renewals even for clean accounts.
How long does it take to get insured?
With a complete submission — DOT number, unit list with VINs and values, and driver list with license numbers and dates of birth — most carriers return quotes within one business day. Binding and filings can typically be completed the same day you accept a proposal.
Can I get coverage with accidents or violations on my record?
Usually yes, though it narrows your market options and raises the price. Major violations such as DUI, reckless driving, or a serious accident in the prior 60 months will disqualify a driver with most standard markets. We move those accounts to specialty and MGA markets built for adverse history.
