Staged Accidents: How Truckers Can Protect Themselves
By iAgency

Good news for honest drivers: law enforcement is getting serious about staged accidents. On October 20, New York announced 16 arrests in a statewide crackdown on auto insurance fraud. Some of the alleged schemes targeted big trucks. For owner-operators and small fleets, the lesson is simple. Fraudsters look for vehicles with big insurance policies, and a few low-cost habits can make your truck a much harder target.
Key takeaways
16 arrests in one sweep. New York State Police and the Department of Financial Services (DFS) announced 16 arrests tied to nearly $500,000 in attempted fraudulent claims.
Trucks are targets. One Bronx case allegedly involved sideswiping a tractor-trailer on purpose on the Cross Bronx Expressway, according to Bloomberg News.
Video wins cases. Dash cam footage helped prove fraud in recent New York cases, including one where a truck driver was a victim.
Fraud raises everyone's costs. New York estimates staged crashes and related fraud can add up to $300 a year to a driver's insurance costs.
What happened in New York
Governor Kathy Hochul announced the arrests on October 20, 2026. The cases span New York City and Suffolk, Onondaga, Monroe and Erie counties, with the most arrests in the Bronx. State Police and DFS investigators worked the cases together.
Bloomberg News, as reported by Transport Topics, described several of the alleged schemes. In the Bronx, a group is accused of sideswiping a tractor-trailer on purpose. In Queens, a man is accused of faking an accident and claiming an Amazon truck hit him to collect more than $18,000 in benefits. In Brooklyn, a driver allegedly hit a stopped car on purpose and then blamed the other driver. Video showed what really happened.
Speaking about that Brooklyn case, the Governor said, "we have the dashcam footage to prove every bit of it."
This is not the first case to involve a truck. In August, DFS announced prison sentences for two men who staged three crashes on New York City highways in 2024. The driver braked suddenly so the vehicle behind would hit him. One of the victims was a New Jersey truck driver. A victim's dash cam footage was key evidence.
Why staged accidents target trucks
Commercial trucks carry higher liability limits than most cars. To a fraud ring, that looks like a bigger payday. Trucks also need more room to stop, so a car that cuts in and brakes hard is hard to avoid. And when a car and a truck collide, people often assume the truck is at fault. Clear evidence changes that.
Common setups include:
The swoop and squat. One car swoops in front of the truck while another blocks it from changing lanes. The front car then brakes hard.
The sudden stop. A driver slams on the brakes for no reason so the truck hits the rear.
The sideswipe. A car drifts into the truck in a lane change or a tight merge, then claims the truck hit it.
The fake wave. A driver waves the truck forward, then hits it and denies the wave.
How to protect your truck and your record
Keep a safe following distance. Space is your best defense. It gives you time to react to a sudden stop.
Run a forward and side camera. Recent New York cases show video can protect drivers who did nothing wrong. Make sure footage saves after a hard brake or impact.
Watch for warning signs. Be careful around cars that linger near your front bumper, drivers who watch you in their mirrors, or a second car that boxes you in.
Call the police every time. Ask for an official report, even for a minor bump. Do not settle at the scene.
Document everything. Take photos of all vehicles, plates, damage and the scene. Count the people in the other car and note any witnesses.
Report it fast. Call your dispatcher and your insurance agent right away. Early notice helps your insurer investigate.
Our risk control services team can help you build a written crash procedure and driver training that cover these steps. Save our claim services page so every driver knows who to call.
What it means for your insurance
A staged crash can lead to a liability claim against your policy. Even a false claim takes time to defend, and an open claim can affect how underwriters see your account. That is why proof matters. Clear video, a police report and quick notice give your insurer what it needs to fight a fake claim.
Review your commercial auto liability insurance limits and make sure your physical damage coverage lists the right value for each truck. Want a second look before the busy holiday weeks? Start an online quote and we will review your coverage with you.
Frequently asked questions
What is a staged accident?
It is a crash caused on purpose so someone can file a false insurance claim, often for fake injuries or medical bills.
Are truck drivers really targeted?
Yes. Recent New York cases include an alleged sideswipe of a tractor-trailer and a 2024 highway scheme in which a truck driver was one of the victims.
Will a dash cam stop a staged accident?
A camera cannot stop a crash, but it can show what really happened. In recent New York cases, video helped investigators prove fraud.
What should I do if I think a crash was staged?
Stay calm and stay safe. Call the police, document the scene, and tell your insurance agent what you saw. In New York, you can also report suspected fraud to DFS at 888-372-8369.
