Moving into Motus: What Every Carrier Must Do Now

FMCSA's new registration system, Motus, is now the home base for every carrier, broker and freight forwarder. Since May 2026 the old Unified Registration System is offline and the FMCSA Portal no longer handles registration. If your trucking company has not set up Motus yet, here is what to do and why it matters for your insurance.

What changed

  • Motus (motus.dot.gov) is where you apply for a USDOT number or operating authority, update company details, file your biennial update and manage who can access your account.

  • Login.gov with an identity check replaces the old USDOT PIN.

  • Existing USDOT numbers stay the same. You simply claim your record in Motus.

Three steps to get set up

  1. Create your user profile. Sign in with Login.gov and finish the identity check. One profile per person.

  2. Claim your USDOT number. The company official should use the same Login.gov email used in the FMCSA Portal. Claiming imports your company data so you only review, update and certify.

  3. Manage everything in one place. Add authorities, update your address, file your MCS-150 and invite staff as sub-account holders.

How this affects your insurance filings

You never send your insurance certificate to FMCSA yourself. Your insurance company files proof of coverage electronically, and those filings now go through Motus. Your operating authority must be listed in Motus for that filing to land, so a missing or unclaimed record can delay your authority. For-hire property carriers need at least $750,000 in liability coverage on file.

Do not miss your biennial update

The MCS-150 biennial update is required every two years, even if nothing changed. The last digit of your USDOT number sets your month: 1 is January, 2 is February, and so on through 0 for October. Missing it can bring penalties of up to $1,000 per day, capped at $10,000, and can deactivate your USDOT number.
