Commercial Auto Insurance: Is Your Policy Growing at the Same Pace as Your Business?

What every fleet owner needs to know to avoid surprises when filing a claim.
When you first launch a trucking business, it’s common to look for basic coverage just to meet legal requirements and start hauling. However, as you add units, hire new drivers, or change the types of commodities you transport, your risk profile changes completely.
Many carriers discover gaps or exclusions in their coverage at the worst possible moment: after an accident has occurred and the claim is either denied or only partially paid.
To ensure your business remains fully protected, ask yourself these three critical questions:
1. Have your routes or cargo types changed?
If you started out hauling general dry freight and are now moving refrigerated goods or hazardous materials, your risk exposures are entirely different. Make sure your Cargo Insurance limits reflect the actual, current value and specific nature of what you are hauling today.
2. Are you properly vetting and adding new drivers?
Before handing over the keys to a new hire, remember that every driver must be officially approved by your insurance provider. Operating a vehicle with an unlisted driver or one with an unverified Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) can completely void your coverage during a claim.
3. Do you have Business Interruption coverage?
If your primary truck is sidelined for weeks due to a covered accident, how will you cover your fixed overhead expenses while it’s in the shop? Downtime or physical damage loss-of-use coverage can be the ultimate safety net that keeps your company solvent.
Proactive Protection is Key
Reviewing your insurance policy annually—or whenever you make a significant change to your operations—is not a waste of time. It is the only way to guarantee that the business you’ve worked so hard to build is fully secure.
